DEVELOPMENT ASSISTANCE
Below you will find the latest news from the Danish development assistance in South Africa, updated July 2009.
1. Launch of Ekurhuleni Youth and Environment Programme
On 05 June 2009 the Danish Embassy, Pretoria attended the launch of the Ekurhuleni Youth and Environment Programme, following the signing of the contract between the embassy and Daveyton Environmental Youth Council (DEYC) in May 2009.The project forms part of the Urban Environmental Management Programme (UEMP) and is done in partnership with Ekurhuleni Municipality. Bokellang Khave, Deputy Head of the Danish Development Team in South Africa, delivered a speech at this event where she indicated the kind of support the Danish Embassy is having towards the project. She also highlighted the confidence that the embassy is showing to the Daveyton Environmental Youth Council.
In addition to that, the pledge was signed by the Danish Embassy, the Ekurhuleni Council and the Daveyton Environmental Youth Council. The pledge was based strongly on ensuring that the environment in Ekurhuleni is kept clean and not harmful to the people living in the area.
The overall objective of the Ekurhuleni Youth and Environment Programme is to encourage the youth to take a greater pride and responsibility in their surrounding nature, and thus to promote environmentally sustainable livelihoods, lifestyles, behaviour and actions in their communities. The project intends to reach the in-school youth by providing a diverse and varied school programme of activities which are in line with National Curriculum Statements. Through environmental education, a better environment should emerge. Furthermore, a structured framework and allocated resources will enable educators to enhance their skills to support, initiate and improve their school environment within their own context. The out-of-school youth will be reached by creating sustainable employment opportunities, as well as developing skills and capacity enabling the youth to get involved in environment management.
The contract is for a duration of 12 months and amounts to DKK 1 700 000 (approx. ZAR 2 500 000).

The Danish Embassy, Pretoria attended the World Youths Mathematics Competition in Durban on 07 July 2009. The competition was one of the many education programmes that the embassy is funding. Included in the maths Olympiad was a parallel competition for local (South Africa) grade 9 learners. 400 KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) high schools, including the rural schools, were invited to enter 2 x Maths Grade 9 pupils to write the examination. The learners and teachers were sponsored to travel to Durban for the competition on 07 July 2009.
An agreement was signed on 19 June 2009 between the Danish Embassy, Pretoria and the eThekwini Municipality and the total amount of funding from the Danish Embassy towards this education initiative by the eThekwini Municipality was R120 000.
3. Low Cost Housing Project
The pergolas and stoeps are currently being erected at the JS BNG show village. There is an existing R19 million Energy Efficiency for low cost housing cooperation project between the Ministry of Human Settlements and the Royal Danish Embassy. The works is expected to be complete by end July 2009. Attached are some of the pictures showing some units with pergola and stoep and some without. The next step in the process will be the planting of vines and trees.
4. South Africa’s wind industry receives boost from the Danish Embassy
The Eastern Cape Community Wind Energy Development Association (ECCWEDA) was established to protect vulnerable communities (landowners) in project development through community education, lobbying of relevant stakeholders for the development of wind farms, and commitment to equitable sharing of benefits. The association is intended to serve as a platform for information exchange, promotion of wind energy and provision of technical support to community wind farms. The Danish Embassy has contributed seed-funding towards the establishment of ECCWEDA.
5. The Support to Education and Skills Development II (SESDII) project on the right track
In May/June 2009 the Danish Embassy visited some of the colleges that are funded by the Danish Embassy, Pretoria under the Support to Education and Skills Development II (SESD II) project. The colleges visited by Sunet Jordaan from the Development Team were the South Cape College, the West Coast College and the College of Cape Town. From her visit it was evident that while there has been great success within the colleges, challenges are still hampering the better functioning of these colleges.
The total budget allocated for the SESD II project is DKK 80,000,000 for a period from January 2006 to December 2009. The project was established in support of the Human Resources Strategy, the National Skills Development Strategy, and the Department of Education policy document through the Further Education and Training (FET) College Sector.
